Ugandan MP escapes death in deadly land dispute.
A Ugandan Member of Parliament representing Buhweju survived death in a bitter land fight in which seven other people including a Vision Group reporter were injured.
Accounts of the incident differ. According to Deo Atuhaire Omuhatizi, the LCV Chairperson of Buhweju District, Mwijukye was assaulted by a group of land usurpers in Rwanyamabare Nyakishana sub-county before being struck by stones and harmed. The altercation took place on Sunday, May 12, at Rwanyambale village.
“Police have transported him for medical attention. Supporters of Honorable Mwijukye and the public are urged to remain calm as authorities pursue the perpetrators.”
However, a statement from the family asserting ownership of the disputed land accuses Mwijukye of provoking violence and orchestrating the abduction of one of their employees into a church where he was allegedly assaulted.
“The workers, angered by this, retaliated to rescue their colleague who was already injured… leading to a confrontation,” the statement explained.
