Fugitive NTC Kaliro accountant remanded in Shs121m corruption case

KAMPALA: The Anti-Corruption Court has remanded a National Teachers College (NTC) Kaliro accountant who had allegedly evaded authorities for nearly a year in connection with a Shs121 million government loss case.

Clement Epalat Okiria, 55, was arraigned before Grade One Magistrate Esther Asiimwe after his arrest on July 31, 2026. He pleaded not guilty to charges of causing financial loss and was remanded to Luzira Prison until August 12, 2026.

The Inspectorate of Government alleges that Okiria and NTC Kaliro Principal Evelyn Grace Lanyero abused their offices, resulting in a financial loss of Shs121 million to the Government of Uganda.

Both officials are on interdiction pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.

Lanyero was charged before the Anti-Corruption Court last year and was later released on bail after spending time on remand.

Authorities said Okiria remained at large until his recent arrest, paving the way for the case against him to proceed.

The court has scheduled September 10, 2026, for the pre-trial hearing.

Principal Inspectorate Officer William Moses Ntumwa is representing the Inspectorate of Government in the prosecution.
