Bunyangabu district officials remanded over abuse of office
Two Bunyangabu District Local Government officials have been remanded to September 25, 2026, after being charged with abuse of office over the alleged irregular purchase of land on behalf of Nyakigumba Town Council.
The accused are Kenneth Bajenje, the Town Clerk, and Beatrice Kitalengwa, a Senior Treasurer. They were arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court following investigations by the Inspectorate of Government, the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The charges stem from events in 2022 when the two officials were serving as Town Clerk and Senior Treasurer, respectively, at Nyakigumba Town Council in Bunyangabu District.
Prosecution alleges that the officials abused their authority by purchasing land in Kisomoro II Cell, East Ward, Nyakigumba Town Council, on behalf of the local government without following mandatory procurement procedures for the acquisition of property.
According to the allegations, the failure to follow the required procedures resulted in the council acquiring less land than had been planned, causing an estimated loss of more than Sh46 million to the government.
The two officials were remanded until September 25, when they are expected to return to court.
The case forms part of the ongoing “Expose the Corrupt” campaign, spearheaded by the Minister of Local Government, Balaam Barugahara, to strengthen accountability among public officials and promote responsible management of public resources and delivery of services to citizens.
