According to Michael Kananura, the fatal accident happened at about 5:00am at Lumonya and involved a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UA 788DJ.

Preliminary police findings indicate that the taxi was transporting passengers from Ssembabule District to Nakasongola for a wedding ceremony when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to speeding. The vehicle subsequently overturned several times.

Police said four people died instantly at the scene, while two others later succumbed to injuries at hospital.

Three survivors who sustained injuries were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment as investigations into the crash continue.

Traffic Police have once again urged motorists to observe speed limits and exercise caution while on the road, noting that speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes in Uganda.

Authorities are yet to release the identities of the deceased pending notification of their next of kin.

Godwin Angalia Kasigwa, resident district commissioner for neighboring Kikuube district where the vessel had departed, told Xinhua by phone that search and rescue operations are ongoing.

“We have so far recovered eight bodies but the water is still high,” said Kasigwa, also a member of the on-site security team.

The Malawi Defense Force aircraft “went off the radar” after it left the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning, it added.

The president ordered a search and rescue operation after aviation officials were unable to contact the aircraft, according to the BBC report.

It was supposed to land at Mzuzu International Airport, in the country’s north, just after 10:00 local time (11:00 BST).

Other passengers on the flight include Mr Chilima’s wife, Mary, and a number of officials from the vice-president’s United Transformation Movement (UTM) party.

After being told of the incident by Defence Force’s commander, Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera cancelled his scheduled flight to the Bahamas.

“The public will be updated of any developments on the situation as facts are established,” the president’s office said.

The reason for the aircraft’s disappearance is not yet known, General Valentino Phiri told Mr Chakwera. Moses Kunkuyu, Malawi’s information minister, told the BBC efforts to find the aircraft are “intensive”.

Mr Chilima was on his way to represent the government at the burial of former cabinet minister Ralph Kasambara, who died three days ago.

Prior to his political career, he held key leadership roles in multinational companies like Unilever and Coca Cola.

Mr Chilima, aged 51, has been vice-president of the southern African country since 2014.

He is married with two children.

Police said, the accident occurred at Kyanamira trading centre, Kyanamira sub-county, Kabale district, along the Kabale-Mbarara highway.

The deceased has been identified as Ramadhan Hussein, 49, who was driving trailer number KDM 588E /ZE3608 white and grey in colour Mercedes Benz.

“It’s alleged that a trailer which was being driven by one Ramadhan Hussein now the deceased from Kenya heading to Rwanda which was carrying manure,” the police said.

“When it reached at Kyanamira trading centre, the driver failed to negotiate the corner and the vehicle overturned hence, he died instantly,” Police added.

Uganda records at least 200,000 deaths as a result of accidents annually, according to police reports.
