Mengo: Staff of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit have received running kits ahead of this year’s Kabaka Birthday Run, with a call to use the platform to advance the fight against HIV/AIDS and corruption.

The kits were officially handed over on Thursday by Brig Gen Henry Isoke, who will lead the Unit’s participation in the annual run scheduled for April 12, 2026. The event will be held under the theme: “Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child against HIV/AIDS.”

Brig Gen Isoke commended the Kabaka and the people of Buganda for their continued support towards government health initiatives. He noted that collaboration with institutions such as the Uganda AIDS Commission and the Ministry of Health has contributed significantly to progress in combating HIV/AIDS.

He emphasized that the Kabaka Birthday Run remains a critical platform for mobilizing communities, particularly men, to take a more active role in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of vulnerable groups, including the girl child.

Beyond health, Brig Gen Isoke used the occasion to urge Ugandans to stand firm against corruption, stressing that accountability and integrity are essential for effective service delivery. He warned that corrupt practices undermine national efforts and disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.

The Anti-Corruption Unit also recognized the importance of partnerships in driving its mandate, appreciating collaborations with BBS Terefayina, Buganda Land Board, and the Buganda Kingdom.

The Kabaka Birthday Run, one of the largest annual health events in Uganda, continues to draw thousands of participants and has become a key vehicle for public health advocacy.

Brig Gen Isoke and the Unit concluded by extending warm birthday wishes to the Kabaka as he marks his 71st birthday.

*Ssabasajja Kabaka awangaale!*

KAMPALA. Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has returned home following Namibia’s refusal to extend his medical treatment stay, citing negative publicity.

Initially granted a 90-day visa in April, the Namibian government did not prolong it due to suspicions of a plot he was abducted.

Flying back to Uganda on Ethiopian Airways, the Kabaka’s arrival was exclusively covered by Buganda’s official broadcaster, BBS Television. Upon landing, he was welcomed by Buganda officials at the airport, including the Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga and Nabagereka Lady Slyvia Nagginda. He was accompanied by an unnamed lady doctor overseeing his health, the Kabaka had been receiving treatment at the Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre in Namibia for an undisclosed illness.

Kabaka return from hospitalDownload

Ugandan activists had protested at the Namibian High Commission in the UK, demanding transparency over the Kabaka’s extended stay and raising concerns about a potential abduction. This led to a delegation from Buganda traveling to Namibia to check on the king’s well-being, triggering diplomatic tensions and criticism from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

The delegation’s visit was denounced by President Yoweri Museveni, who urged Ugandans to avoid causing embarrassment by overly showing support for the Kabaka.
A group of five clan leader visited Namibia but the group faced questioning about their authorization to visit the king before leaving.
As the Kabaka returned, a Namibian state official emphasized that it was routine for foreign nationals to leave after 90 days, downplaying any controversy.

Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister concurred, acknowledging Namibia’s decision to avoid negative attention and urging respect for their regulations. The Kabaka’s homecoming concludes a widely publicized and contentious chapter in Namibia, with Buganda and Uganda eagerly anticipating updates on his health and future plans.

GERMANY. Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi has been admitted to a mental hospital in Namibia, according to a letter attributed to Martin Andjaba, the ambassador to Germany, which is circulating on social media.

The letter dated May 24, 2024 mentions that Kabaka Mutebi arrived in Namibia on April 14 and is undergoing psychotherapy for an stress-related medical condition.

While the authenticity of the letter remains unverified, our quick search confirmed the existence of the Okonguarrai Therapeutic Centre in Namibia, and that Andjaba is indeed Namibia’s ambassador to Germany.

The Okonguarei Therapeutic Centre is situated in a natural setting on 5000 hectares of land. It is known for treating a range of conditions including depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, personality dysfunctions (psychosis), PTSD, stress management, somatoform disorders, substance-related disorders, and childhood-related disorders.

“We personalise treatment sessions, including group therapy… the Okonguarei method of treatment is extensive,” reads a statement on the centre’s website.

The centre is enhanced by its magnificent rock formations and diverse free-roaming wildlife, such as giraffes, elands, oryx, mountain zebras, and leopards.

KAMPALA. The first photo of Kabaka Ronald Mutebi has surfaced after a prolonged absence from public view.

The photo copied from private social media users and shared by Mengo spokesperson Israel Kazibwe, depicts the Kabaka seated alongside a gentleman identified by a Facebook page-Agfa mu Lubiri as Ambassador Ndawula with the latter holding the Kabaka’s arm.

The background suggests a remote, forested area which according to Mr. Kazibwe is a “game facility” in Namibia.

Last week, Buganda’s Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, reiterated that the Kabaka is receiving medical treatment abroad, accompanied by his medical team for ongoing care.

Mayiga stressed the importance of responsible social media usage during Buganda Kingdom Lukiiko.

Parliament Speaker Anita Among and Deputy Thomas Tayebwa today morning led a team of MPs to Mengo, where they contributed towards the Kabaka’s birthday run.

The visitors were received by Buganda premier Charles Peter Mayiga, who said Among was the first Speaker to visit Bulange for such a cause.

The Legislators contributed shs50m for the upcoming run. The proceeds will be used in the fight against HIV/Aids.

This year’s Kabaka Birthday Run, slated for Sunday, 07 April 2024 is hinged on the fight against HIV/AIDs scourge under the theme: “Men are stars in the fight against HIV/AIDs to save the girl child.”

Speaker Among and her entourage, which included Government Chief Whip Hon Hamson Obua, the Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness Hon Lilian Aber, was welcomed to Bulange by the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of the Kingdom of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga.

In his welcoming remarks, Mayiga termed the Speaker’s visit historic, adding that it marks the beginning of deeper collaboration between the Kingdom and Parliament.

“This is the first time the Speaker has been to Bulange… This is a historic visit because no Speaker of Parliament has ever been here for this purpose of participating in the run and it marks a starting point of a collaborative program with Parliament to promote the eradication of HIV/AIDs in the country,” Mayiga said.

Mayiga said for the last five years, Kabaka’s runs have been themed in the fight against HIV/AIDs and it is projected to continue following threats of withdrawal of financial support by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

He called upon Parliament to prioritise the health sector in their legislative agenda, by ensuring that hospitals are spread all over the country, well equipped with medicines and equipment and also ensure that health workers are adequately paid.

He also urged politicians to find some time off politicking and attend to social needs of their constituents.

“Don’t get so consumed by politics all the time. Give special attention to some social aspects like health, sports, community development, protection of culture and heritage,” he said.

Speaker Among commended the Kabaka of Buganda, His Royal Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II for championing health needs and pledged to continue supporting the Kingdom’s humanitarian causes.

“I appreciate the Kabaka for being the champion in the fight against diseases like HIV/AIDS and others and we are here to support the Kingdom in doing so. I am cognizant of the fact that HIV/AIDs has been prevalent and Buganda Kingdom has done a tremendous job…Fighting HIV/AIDs and achieving the dream by 2030 is the role of government and we thank you [Kingdom] for complementing government,” Among said.

On behalf of Parliament, Speaker Among contributed Shs50 million to support the run, while the Buganda Parliamentary Caucus bought kits for 529 MPs worth Shs10,580,000. The Speaker and MPs also gifted the Kabaka with birthday presents.

For the 11th year now, Buganda Kingdom, in collaboration with other stakeholders has been organizing the Annual Kabaka Birthday Run to celebrate the birth of Kabaka with a noble community cause where proceeds from these annual events have been geared towards different health-related causes such as fight against fistula, sickle cells and now HIV/AIDs.
