The shocking murder of Muhsin Hendricks, recognized as the first openly gay imam globally, serves as a grim reminder of the lethal impact of homophobia and hate-driven violence.

Killed in South Africa on Saturday, Hendricks’ death has sent ripples of grief and anger across the LGBTQ+ community worldwide, prompting urgent reflections on the safety of queer individuals, especially those who challenge societal norms.

While investigators have yet to confirm the motive, the possibility that this was a hate crime is both plausible and deeply unsettling.

Hendricks’ life was a beacon of bravery and resilience. In 1996, he made history by publicly embracing his identity as a gay imam, a courageous act that positioned him at the crossroads of faith and self-expression.

Through the Al-Ghurbaah Foundation in Cape Town, he created a safe space for queer Muslims, offering support to those grappling with the intersection of their faith and sexual orientation.

Yet, his advocacy came with immense personal risk. Hendricks endured death threats and relentless opposition, as captured in the 2022 documentary  “The Radical” which chronicled his efforts to establish a mosque for LGBTQ+ Muslims.

“The need to be authentic was greater than the fear to die,” he once said—a statement that now feels hauntingly prophetic.

South Africa, despite its progressive constitution that protects LGBTQ+ rights, remains a perilous environment for queer individuals.

The country’s soaring murder rates, among the highest globally, are compounded by frequent acts of violence against the LGBTQ+ community. Hendricks’ killing is not an isolated tragedy but part of a disturbing trend targeting those who defy societal expectations.

The fact that his assailants remain unidentified highlights systemic failures in addressing hate crimes and safeguarding marginalized groups.

Reactions from religious and governmental bodies have been mixed. The Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa condemned Hendricks’ murder but reiterated its position that his views on same-sex relationships were “incompatible with Islamic teachings.”

This contradictory stance—denouncing violence while upholding discriminatory beliefs—reveals the deep-seated hypocrisy that fuels anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment.

Similarly, South Africa’s Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has vowed to monitor the case, but such assurances lack weight without tangible efforts to tackle the root causes of hate-driven violence.

Hendricks’ death is a sobering reminder that the fight for equality is fraught with danger and resistance. His murder is not just a loss for the LGBTQ+ community but for humanity at large.

It underscores the pressing need for governments, religious institutions, and civil society to confront homophobia and transphobia with unwavering resolve. Education, advocacy, and legal reforms are critical to dismantling the systems that perpetuate hate and violence.

In my country Uganda there is intensified LGBTQ+ persecution with harsh anti-gay laws, that has sparked global outrage. Activists face violence, arrests, and discrimination, while international calls for human rights protections grow.

As we mourn Muhsin Hendricks, we must also honor his legacy by continuing the struggle for a world where no one is forced to choose between their faith, identity, and safety. Silence in the face of such atrocities is complicity. It is time to raise our voices, take a stand, and demand justice for Hendricks and all those whose lives have been cut short by hate.

Racheal and her girlfriend, Pauline Namugenyi, were ambushed at the residence of Racheal by the community for enjoying their inherent human right.

Racheal vividly recalls her own neighbours- the people who had become almost family members, storming her home, hurling insults and condemning us as immoral and cursed.

“ However, it was as if we jumped from frying pan into fire when the law enforcers in form of police arrived. These same police officers, the custodians of law, intervened but instead of offering us protection, they detained us at Old Kampala Police Station.’” Racheal says.

Freedom came only after bribes were paid. but back at home, everything was left in shambles, with property either destroyed or stolen by the community members.

That night marked the beginning of the couple’s journey as a traumatized Ugandan LGBTQ+ individual. The country’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, signed into law in May 2023, solidified the hatred and fear in the East African Country.

But Racheal is now happily enjoying her sexual choice in the United Kingdom where freedoms are respected, gaining hope and love.

The supportive environment and vibrant LGBTQ+ community have helped Racheal rebuild and now a member of various LGBTQ+ Groups including the Metroplotan Church of North London where Pastor – Rev. Peta Evans is head of laity (photo below).

Racheal’s story is not only unique but it’s a testament to resilience, good luck and global support.

“ But I am now a different being as I’ve learned to confront trauma differently and become an advocate of change. The UK’s strong stand on LGBTQ+ rights inspires me, and I’ll continue fighting for equality, both here and in Uganda. I know there are hundreds, if not thousands, of couples living in daily fear, under trauma and stigma by own families, communities, leaders and law enforcers in Uganda,” Racheal says.

This year’s UK Black Pride was a vibrant gathering of community, culture, and activism. And Ugandans joined whose country has the harshest anti homosexuality law attended to celebrate with others.

Black Pride began as a modest group that traveled by bus to Southend-on-Sea had blossomed into a global event, drawing over 25,000 attendees to the previous year’s celebration. UK Black Pride had found a new home in Newham, occupying the largest space the organization had ever used.

This year’s event brought together thousands of attendees for a powerful combination of party and celebrations, featuring an exciting lineup of performances, engaging talks, community stalls, and interactive workshops. The growth of UK Black Pride reflected the enduring need for safe spaces where LGBTQI+ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Latin American, and Middle Eastern backgrounds could celebrate their identities and advocate for their rights.

Newham Council had been proud to host this globally significant event once again and had reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse community. They had been dedicated to challenging discrimination and promoting respect for all, regardless of ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender expression.

Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE had said, “Newham is a beacon of diversity and inclusion, and we are immensely proud to have hosted UK Black Pride for the third consecutive year. This global celebration has been a testament to our borough’s unwavering commitment to equality and a society where everyone feels safe, valued, and empowered to be their authentic selves.”

UK Black Pride CEO, Phyll Opoku-Gyimah had expressed joy at announcing the return to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for the third year running. It had slowly become a great home for the event as it grew bigger and bigger. Reflecting on previous years, the organizers had planned to make this the biggest and boldest UK Black Pride yet, working on a powerful theme for the year.

Attendees had been invited to join on 11 August 2024, at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, for a celebration that promised to be both historic and transformative.

An estimated 32,000, including more than 500 LGBTQ+ groups, flocked to Hyde Park Corner to watch or join in the parade on Saturday (29 June).

Weaving through the capital, the parade marched down Whitehall before celebrations began at various locations.

Headliners included singer Bebe Rexha, Drag Race winner Ginger Johnson, and RuPaul’s DragCon stars Drag Syndrome in Trafalgar Square.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan was also spotted joining in the celebrations.

Recently Uganda passed into law an Anti-Homosexuality law which prescribes life imprisonment for homosexual activities. They are only finding chance to exercise their to freely meet in Europe and other Western countries.

Hundreds of LGBTQ Ugandans have since fled the country for fear of being arrested.

KAMPALA. The East African Court of Justice (EACJ) has asked activist groups to file a written submission in an appeal seeking to overturn a ruling that sought to block the construction of the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.

The regional court sitting in Arusha in November 2023 threw out a case in which activists including the African Centre for Energy Governance (AFIEGO) had filed against the pipeline project that is running between Uganda and Tanzania. The court then ruled that it had no jurisdiction to hear the case by AFIEGO and others because it was filed too late or out of time. 

But AFEIGO, Center for Food and Adequate Living Rights (CEFROHT)-Uganda, Natural Justice (NJ)-Kenya, and Centre for Strategic Litigation (CSL)-Tanzania, appealed against the ruling in a case they had filed in November 2020. On Tuesday, The appellate division of EACJ accepted the appeal and asked the activists to file written submissions by March 22, 2024. 

The court also asked the governments of Uganda and Tanzania as well as the secretary general of the East African Community (EAC) who are the respondents in the case, to file their counterarguments by April 22, 2024.   

AFEIGO and others argued that the EACOP violates key East African and international treaties and laws including the East African Community (EAC) Treaty, Protocol for Sustainable Development of the Lake Victoria basin, Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Others include the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights as well as the African Convention on Conservation of Natural Resources among others. 

The court also ordered the activists to file any rejoinders to the counter-arguments to be submitted by the governments of Uganda and Tanzania as well as the EAC secretary general by May 6, 2024. AFIEGO’s chief executive officer, Dickens Kamugisha in an interview said that they are happy that the court has set in motion processes to ensure that justice is served for the benefit of communities.  

“Communities and East Africans in general rely on their natural and other resources to make a living and any projects such as the EACOP that threaten these resources should be challenged. Those challenging harmful projects should be supported by East Africans and other people of goodwill,” he said

Meanwhile, Farida Aliwa, the executive director of Natural Justice said they look forward to getting back to the court in a month with our detailed written submissions.

“We are committed to protect both the environment and the well-being of the people in East Africa. We believe our submissions will help the court understand the environmental impact of the pipeline” said Aliwa.

She said they want the court to recognize how the pipeline affects the environment and the delicate ecological balance we work hard to maintain.

“We are determined to present our case and support the sustainable future of East Africa,” she added. 

EACOP is a 1,443-kilometre heated pipeline that will run from the oilfields in Lake Albert in Northwestern Uganda to Tanzania’s Indian Ocean port of Tanga. Uganda and Tanzania have persistently denied that the EACOP project which is to cost about $5 billion to construct will have any adverse effects on the environment as suggested by environmental and human rights activist groups.
