President Yoweri Museveni has urged National Resistance Movement (NRM) delegates to play a leading role in fighting corruption at the local government level and ensuring that government services reach the people.

While addressing delegates of the NRM Special Interest Groups (SIGs) at Kololo Independence Grounds on Monday, Museveni outlined Uganda’s economic journey, highlighting its expansion from $3.9 billion in 1986 to $66 billion today. He said the country is now working towards becoming a high middle-income economy worth $500 billion.

The President explained that the economy has gone through five key phases: minimum recovery, expansion of production, diversification, value addition, and the current phase of the knowledge economy. He cited innovations such as the locally developed Kira electric buses, vaccine production, and computer manufacturing as signs of progress.

Museveni emphasized the need for all Ugandans to join the money economy. “In 2013, 68% of homesteads were outside the money economy. Today, 67% are in, but 33% remain out. Every family must produce for both food and cash,” he said.

Turning to governance, Museveni tasked the delegates to ensure that corruption is uprooted, especially at the local level. He warned against bribery in local government recruitment and urged citizens to hold leaders accountable for service delivery. “Don’t allow corrupt people to undermine your progress. Stop those who steal public funds or take bribes,” he said.

The President also called on leaders and citizens to ensure proper maintenance of roads, monitor the performance of the police in fighting crime, and safeguard free education in government schools. He expressed concern that despite government funding, some schools still charge parents illegal fees, frustrating poor families.

On healthcare, Museveni decried the theft of medicines from hospitals and urged communities to expose wrongdoers. He also emphasized the importance of safe water access, education, and healthcare as foundations for improved welfare.

The President concluded by encouraging Ugandans to fight poverty, corruption, and crime, while embracing education, healthcare, and clean water as pathways to prosperity.

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong reminded delegates to put the party above personal interests. He urged members to foster unity, stressing that internal competition should not create enmity. “We are members of a family. Focus on the bigger picture of the party—the mission, objectives, and goals—rather than personal ambitions,” Todwong said.

The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has unanimously endorsed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the party’s sole candidate for both party chairman and presidential flagbearer in the forthcoming elections.

In the same sitting, CEC also confirmed Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo as the sole candidate for the position of First National Vice Chairman, reinforcing his long-standing role as a pillar of party leadership.

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong told journalists on Friday that the endorsements are a clear demonstration of the unity, stability, and continuity within the party as it prepares for the next phase of Uganda’s democratic journey.

“As required by the Constitution of the party, aspirants for top positions are vetted by CEC before their names are presented to NEC, which then forwards them to the National Conference. I am happy to report that His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was vetted unopposed, having been nominated unopposed,” Todwong said.

He added: “Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo too was vetted and endorsed unopposed. Their sole candidatures reflect the overwhelming confidence of the party in their ability to provide consistent and tested leadership.”

While other positions have attracted multiple aspirants, Todwong revealed that the party has encouraged dialogue and consensus to reduce contestation. “The party has been engaging candidates to consider the bigger picture of national leadership. Some have voluntarily stepped down after reflection, not out of coercion but persuasion,” he said.

Todwong also noted that talks are ongoing between the First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga and Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, to see if they can harmonize their position on who will take the flag for Second National Vice Chairperson (Female). Should talks fail, NEC will make a final decision on the flagbearer for the position currently held by Kadaga.

Preparations for the NEC meeting are underway, with accreditation currently being conducted for Members of Parliament on the NRM ticket, LC5 chairpersons, district executives, and city and municipal mayors.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has today launched the official portrait of its presidential flagbearer, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, alongside the theme that will guide the party’s campaigns for the 2025–26 elections.

At en event the 1st National Vice Chairman, Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo, underscored the significance of the moment as both a renewal of the party’s mandate and a reaffirmation of the values that have carried the NRM this far.

Unveiling the theme “Protecting the Gains as We Make a Qualitative Leap into a High Middle Income Status”, Kigongo said it captures the dual responsibility of consolidating Uganda’s hard-won progress while preparing the nation for the next phase of transformation.

“Our journey has not been easy, but through discipline, unity, and the support of Ugandans, we have reached this point. This theme is a call to protect the gains we have made together and to boldly step forward into a future of shared prosperity,” Kigongo said.

He emphasised that the new campaign theme is not just a slogan but a strategic direction that reflects Uganda’s readiness to transition from stability and steady progress to a higher level of economic and social achievement.

“We must stand together as a Movement. If we remain united and disciplined, there is no challenge we cannot overcome. This is the spirit in which we ask Ugandans to renew our mandate, so that our Chairman continues leading the country to greater heights,” he added.

Kigongo also called on leaders and aspirants to embrace the party’s values of persuasion and service.

“Force cannot win hearts. Convincing language, humility, and respect for the people are what will strengthen the Movement. Discipline and unity must always come first,” he said.

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, while contextualising the new theme, highlighted the historical progression of the Movement’s guiding messages. From the 10-Point Programme in 1986, to “Tackling the Tasks Ahead” in the late 1990s, “Consolidating Achievements” in the early 2000s, “Prosperity for All,” “Peace, Unity and Transformation,” “Steady Progress,” and most recently “Securing Your Future,” each theme, he noted, has reflected the priorities of its time.

“Today’s theme builds on that legacy. Uganda’s economy is growing at about 7% annually, with a GDP of nearly $45 billion, placing us firmly on the path to middle income status. The task now is to protect those gains and make the qualitative leap into a higher middle income economy,” Todwong explained.

KAMPALA: The ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) Entrepreneurs League elections have been marred by controversy, particularly surrounding claims made by the Ceasor Mulenga camp.

According to sources, Mulenga’s team has been spreading false information about injecting shs1.8b into the Entrepreneurs League SACCO.

The Truth Behind the Claims

A thorough investigation has revealed that these claims are entirely baseless.

There is no evidence to suggest that Mulenga or his team has deposited any funds, let alone shs1.8 billion, into the SACCO.

This lack of financial commitment raises serious questions about the credibility of Mulenga’s campaign promises as he vies for the position of Chairman of the NRM Entrepreneurs League.

Furthermore, when the Buganda and Kampala NRM SACCOs requested that Mulenga deposits funds into their accounts, he avoided doing so.

According to Al Hajj Karim Karamagi, the contestant for CEC’s Vice Chairman for the NRM Central Region, Mulenga’s reluctance to engage with these SACCOs suggests that his claims may be nothing more than empty promises.

Misleading the Public

The use of dummy cheques and empty promises has been a hallmark of Mulenga’s campaign, aimed at deceiving unsuspecting entrepreneurs and voters.

This blatant disregard for transparency and honesty raises serious concerns about Mulenga’s integrity and leadership capabilities, the contestant said.

As the NRM Entrepreneurs League elections approach, it’s essential for voters to see through these false claims and make informed decisions.

Mulenga’s known phone numbers went unanswered when contacted.
