Ex-Mukono Speaker Remanded

MUKONO. FormerFormer Mukono District Speaker Nakasi Betty Hope has been remanded until October 21, 2026, after appearing before the Anti-Corruption Court over alleged corruption linked to a jobs-for-sale investigation.
She was arraigned on Tuesday afternoon by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU), jointly with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Prosecution alleges that on June 30, 2025, at Mukono District Local Government headquarters, Nakasi, together with others still at large, solicited Shs2 million from the then Procurement Officer of Buikwe District.
It is alleged she claimed she could influence the Mukono District Service Commission to secure his promotion to Senior Procurement Officer, Mukono District, in exchange for the money.
The case stems from ongoing investigations into complaints of illegal sale of government jobs in Mukono Local Government.
According to investigators, the probe has focused on allegations of extortion and manipulation of recruitment and promotion processes, involving some members of the District Service Commission and political actors.
SHACU said investigations are continuing and suspects will be brought before court where evidence supports prosecution.
The unit reiterated that government recruitment and promotion must follow merit-based procedures under public service laws, in line with President Yoweri Museveni’s directive against demanding money for jobs.
