Ugandan Justice Sebutinde elected vice president of ICJ
KAMPALA: Ugandan Justice Julia Sebutinde has been elected as vice president of the UN-backed International Court of Justice (ICJ).
This was announced in a Tuesday press release by the ICJ, exciting millions of Ugandans.
“Judge Julia Sebutinde (Uganda) was today elected Vice-President of the International Court of Justice by her peers, for a term of three years,” ICJ announced.
“Vice-President Sebutinde has been a Member of the Court since 6 February 2012. Before joining the Court, Vice-President Sebutinde was a judge at the Special Court for Sierra Leone from
2005 to 2011.”
Sebutinde was recently bantered over her ruling in a landmark judgment in a case of South Africa against Israel regarding the war in Gaza.
In a minority ruling Sebutinde disagreed that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza.
She also recommended that the situation in Gaza was a political one and could only be solved through diplomatic or negotiated settlement.
