High Court acquits suspects in Gen Katumba Wamala attempted murder case
KAMPALA: Yusuf Nyanzi, the primary suspect in the attempted murder of Gen Katumba Wamala in June 2021, has been cleared of charges by the High Court.
Nyanzi, who has spent time in Luzira prison over eight years and is involved in three separate high-profile murder cases, including those of Maj Muhammad Kiggundu and former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi, was released alongside Hussein Sserubula due to insufficient evidence linking them to terrorism charges and the murder of Katumba’s daughter and driver, as well as the attempted murder of Katumba himself.
However, charges including murder, attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated robbery, and affiliation with a terrorist organization have been confirmed against six other accused individuals by the same court.
These charges stem from various criminal activities within the Kampala Metropolitan area, including murders, robberies, and attempted murders. The accused are implicated in incidents dating back to 2015, with evidence including weapons and materials related to the crimes found during searches of their homes.
The remaining six suspects are set to face trial before a panel of three judges of the international crimes division, as announced by the office of the director of public prosecutions Jacquelyn Okui.
