Teacher killed, 16 pupils injured by lightning strikes in northern Uganda

One teacher was killed and 16 pupils injured by lightning strikes in the northern Uganda district of Oyam.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, the police spokesperson for North Kyoga Region, said in a statement Wednesday the incident occured Tuesday evening during a drizzle while the learners were attending a lesson.
“The strike resulted in injuries to sixteen pupils and one teacher,” Okema noted, adding that injured were taken for medication.
“Another teacher, Joseph, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at Atapara Hospital,” he added.
The officer said the scene will be revised as part of ongoing investigations.
In Nov. 2024, 14 people were killed and 34 others injured when lightning struck a prayer gathering in Lamwo District, northern Uganda.
