SHACU Probes Promoters’ 1.5B Fund

09 Feb 2026

The Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) has summoned the leadership of the Uganda Music Promoters SACCO to account for UGX 1.5 billion in public funds.

This money was part of a revolving fund gifted by President Yoweri Museveni in January 2026 to support and empower the entertainment industry.

A formal notice issued by Sowedi Mohammed, the Deputy Director for Economic Fraud and Anti-Corruption, requires SACCO Chairperson Katongole Paul and prominent promoters including Abbey Musinguzi (Abitex), Mayanja Godfrey, Kaweesi Yasin, and Kafeero Zaidi to provide statements.

The investigation is being conducted in coordination with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) following internal reports and public allegations of financial mismanagement.

While the grant was designed to provide low-interest seed capital for industry practitioners, investigators are now probing whether the funds were diverted or improperly disbursed.

The officials were ordered to report to the SHACU offices at the Parliament Building on Monday, February 9, 2026. This probe marks a significant move by the government to ensure accountability for presidential initiatives within the creative sector.
