KAMPALA — Police have arrested eight suspects in connection with the killing of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates player Sydney Gongodyo, as investigations into the mob attack that claimed his life gather pace.

Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke announced on Monday that five additional suspects had been arrested, bringing the total number of arrests to eight.

“More five arrests have been made. The number of arrests stands at eight. Details in due course,” Rusoke said in a post on X.

The latest arrests follow an earlier police statement indicating that three suspects had been taken into custody over the incident. According to police, the suspects are being held at Kira Road Police Station as investigations continue.

Police said Gongodyo was attacked by a mob after he was allegedly linked to a handbag snatching incident in Kampala. He sustained serious injuries during the assault and was later rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The force has since launched a murder investigation and vowed to pursue all those involved in the fatal attack.

The death of Gongodyo has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s sporting fraternity. The talented rugby player featured for Stanbic Black Pirates and the national Rugby Cranes team and was widely regarded as one of the country’s promising rugby talents.

His killing has reignited concerns over the increasing cases of mob justice in Uganda, with sports personalities, human rights advocates and members of the public calling for accountability.

Police have repeatedly warned against taking the law into one’s own hands, emphasizing that suspects should be handed over to law enforcement agencies for due process.

Investigators are continuing to identify and track down other individuals believed to have participated in the attack, with authorities indicating that more arrests could follow.

The case remains under active investigation.
