Top NUP Supporter Demands Accountability for Billions of Shillings

A long-time National Unity Platform (NUP) supporter, Lubwama John, has gone public with accusations of financial mismanagement in the party, claiming that billions of shillings contributed by supporters remain unaccounted for.
In a detailed statement titled “The Lubwama Dossier: 50 Million Later… and This Is the Truth,” Lubwama says he has personally contributed UGX 50 million to the party since 2020, driven by a belief in the need for political change in Uganda.
He now alleges that despite years of fundraising, NUP has not provided supporters with clear financial reports.
According to Lubwama, NUP collected funds from a wide range of activities — including diaspora mobilization, protest drives, card sales, ticket sales, online fundraisers, and contributions from Members of Parliament — but has offered “zero accountability.”
He claims there has been no financial breakdown, reporting, or transparency, despite constant public fundraising appeals.
Lubwama further argues that the lack of accountability has affected the party’s performance, noting that NUP did not field candidates in 207 of Uganda’s 499 constituencies in the last election.
He describes the absence of candidates in 41% of constituencies as “failure,” saying supporters deserve to know how their contributions were used.
The dossier raises specific questions about various party finances — including alleged discrepancies in land purchases, quarterly government funding, and money contributed internally by elected leaders.
Lubwama also accuses party leaders of living lifestyles that do not match the party’s stated financial struggles, contrasting this with the challenges faced by families of political prisoners and supporters.
He insists that before any further fundraising, the party should publish comprehensive financial records showing how much money has been collected, how it was spent, who handled it, and who benefited.
Declaring that his “wallet is officially closed,” Lubwama says he still supports the idea of political change but argues that such change must be built on accountability and transparency.
“The people have sacrificed enough. Now we want transparency, structure, and honest leadership,” he concludes, urging the public to demand openness within the party.
NUP has not yet issued an official response to the claims.
