New political party moves to upset NUP
KAMPALA. The emergence of a new political party, People Power Front (PPF), ahead of the 2026 general elections has caused concern among leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP). PPF, which advocates for social justice, economic empowerment, and human rights, is seen as a potential threat to NUP’s support base.
The Uganda Electoral Commission has approved PPF after it met the necessary requirements for registration. Many members of PPF are reportedly from NUP and other opposition parties, as well as some from the ruling NRM party. It remains uncertain whether former LOP Mathias Mpuuga will be part of PPF or join later.
PPF aims to bridge the gap between the government and the people, prioritizing marginalized communities and promoting social justice, economic empowerment, and human rights. Some observers believe PPF could significantly impact NUP’s support leading up to and after the 2026 elections. It is worth noting that NUP originated from the People Power Movement but chose to merge with an existing party, NURP, before transitioning to NUP in 2020 under Bobi Wine’s leadership. Despite ongoing legal disputes over NUP’s constitution, preparations for the 2026 elections continue.
Failure to formally register the People Power Movement with the Electoral Commission may hinder Wine and his group’s prospects as the elections approach. Registering the People Power Movement could have potentially blocked PPF from successful registration.
