Three Officers Arraigned Over Escape

KAMPALA. The Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala has today arraigned three police officers attached to the Busia border for allegedly aiding the escape of a high-profile suspect.
The move follows a joint operation between the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, the Criminal Investigations Directorate, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The accused officers are Assistant Inspector of Police Kali Godfrey, Corporal Owiny Peter, and Corporal Odul Oscar. All three were stationed at the Busia customs office, serving within the Interpol and terrorism tactical units.
The prosecution alleges that between December 22 and 23, 2025, the trio abused their authority by facilitating the escape of Najib Kasule.
Kasule had been intercepted at the Uganda-Kenya border as a key suspect in a massive gold scam. According to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, Kasule is linked to a fraudulent scheme where an American national was swindled of USD 840,000.
By allowing the suspect to flee, the officers now face serious charges of abuse of office, aiding a prisoner to escape, and conspiracy to defeat justice.
The court heard that the officers’ actions were arbitrary and a direct violation of their professional mandate.
Their failure to secure a high-value suspect has significantly hampered ongoing investigations into international financial fraud.
Following the reading of the charges, the presiding magistrate ordered the three officers to be remanded in custody. They are scheduled to return to court on January 21, 2026, as the legal proceedings continue and the search for the escaped suspect intensifies.
